Hyaluronic Acid Basics and How to Layer a Serum

A relaxing facial treatment

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the skin, where it helps hold water and keep tissues supple. In skin care, the hyaluronic acid used in serums and creams is typically produced through fermentation rather than taken from animals, and it works as a humectant: an ingredient that attracts water and holds it at the surface of the skin.

Because it binds moisture so efficiently, hyaluronic acid is a favourite for anyone whose skin feels tight, dull or dehydrated. It suits most skin types, including oily and combination skin, since it hydrates without adding oil. Many people find that a well-formulated hyaluronic serum leaves skin looking plumper and smoother, and helps makeup sit more evenly.

Different molecular weights, different feel

You may see labels mentioning multi-molecular or low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid. In simple terms, larger molecules tend to stay on the surface, forming a light film that helps reduce water loss and gives an immediate feeling of comfort. Smaller molecules may settle into the upper layers of the skin, so the hydration feels less superficial. A serum that combines several sizes often gives the most rounded result.

Hyaluronic acid is a cosmetic ingredient, not a treatment. It does not change the structure of the skin, but it can noticeably improve how hydrated and fresh the skin looks and feels day to day.

How to layer a hyaluronic serum

Serums work best when they are applied in the right order and on the right canvas. A simple routine looks like this:

  • Cleanse with a gentle, sulphate-free cleanser and pat the skin until it is damp, not dry.
  • Apply two to three drops of serum to the face and neck while the skin is still slightly moist, pressing rather than rubbing.
  • Wait about a minute, then follow with a moisturizer to seal the water in. This step matters most in dry or air-conditioned rooms.
  • In the morning, finish with sunscreen; at night, a richer cream or facial oil can go on top.

The golden rule is thinnest to thickest: watery serums first, creams and oils last. If you use several serums, apply the hyaluronic one first, since it prepares the skin for whatever follows.

Common questions

Can I use it every day? Yes. Hyaluronic acid is gentle enough for twice-daily use and pairs well with most other ingredients, including vitamin C and niacinamide.

Why does my skin sometimes feel tighter after using it? In very dry air, a humectant applied to dry skin can pull moisture from the skin instead of the air. Applying it to damp skin and always sealing with a moisturizer usually solves this.

How long before I notice a difference? The plumping effect is often visible within minutes, while the overall feeling of comfort tends to build over a couple of weeks of consistent use. As with any new product, patch test first and stop using it if irritation occurs.
