Urea for Very Dry, Cracked Skin: What It Is and How to Use It

RepaRose 10% urea cream for dry skin repair

What is urea in skin care?

Urea is a small molecule that occurs naturally in the skin as part of its own moisturising system, sometimes called the natural moisturising factor. The urea used in cosmetics is produced synthetically and is identical to the one found in skin, which is one reason it is so well tolerated.

In creams and lotions, urea does two things. At lower concentrations it works as a humectant, drawing water into the outer layer of the skin and helping it stay there. At higher concentrations it also has a gentle softening action on rough, thickened skin, helping the surface feel smoother.

Why it suits very dry, cracked skin

Very dry skin on the heels, elbows, knees and hands often feels rough, flaky and tight, and in cooler months it can crack. Plain oils and butters help by sealing the surface, but they do not add water. Urea does, which is why creams combining urea with nourishing oils are a classic choice for rough areas. The combination works in two directions at once: the urea draws water into the surface, while the oils and butters slow it from escaping again.

Many people find that a urea cream applied consistently helps the skin feel softer within days and look smoother over a few weeks. The effect builds with regular use rather than appearing overnight.

Understanding concentrations

The percentage of urea on a label gives a hint about how the product will feel and what it is for:

  • Around 5 percent: light daily hydration for normal to dry skin on the face and body.
  • Around 10 percent: everyday care for dry, rough skin on hands, arms and legs.
  • Around 20 to 30 percent: intensive care for very rough areas such as heels and elbows, usually applied at night.
  • Above 30 percent: strong softening for thick, calloused skin; use sparingly and only on the intended area.

Higher percentages may cause a brief tingling on cracked skin. If this happens, start with a lower concentration or apply a plain moisturizer first until the skin is more comfortable.

How to use a urea cream

Apply to clean, slightly damp skin, ideally after a shower when the surface is soft. Massage into rough areas until absorbed and, for heels, wear cotton socks overnight to help the cream work. Use daily at first, then reduce to a few times a week once the skin feels smooth.

Urea is a cosmetic ingredient intended to hydrate and soften the appearance of dry skin. It is not a treatment for medical skin conditions, so if cracks are deep, painful or bleeding, or if you have a diagnosed skin condition, please consult a pharmacist or doctor before use. Avoid broken skin, patch test first and stop if irritation occurs.
